Serves in a lead role in the conceptualization, development, and implementation of highly complex, integrated systems.

General Notes 

Must be eligible to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer. 

Using senior-level system analysis, design, development, and integration skills, the Senior Technology Architect will address complex technical issues as part of the implementation of a new financial aid system to support the University of Texas at Austin.


  • Analyze technical problems. Design, develop and document solutions where maintainability and reduction of technical debt are primary considerations. Integrate systems with functional interoperability. Utilize test-driven development and lead code reviews.
  • Develop system architectures and design patterns so that solutions can be replicated for sustainability. Develop integration middleware and Groovy configuration scripts as needed to support financial aid. 
  • Collaborate and participate in configuration changes, testing cycles, application releases, and cutover activities. Provide advanced operational support to include monitoring systems, providing customer service, investigating issues, and remediating code deficiencies. Perform application and system quality assurance activities to ensure accuracy, data and process integrity, security, usability, and accessibility.
  • Communicate effectively with community members and stakeholders to elicit and document requirements, present solutions, and investigate and resolve issues. Manage technical projects independently. Provide mentorship and training to junior technical staff.
  • Provide input for the development of departmental standards, process improvements, and technical documentation. Represent the department and the University at industry conferences, seminars, and events.
  • Identify opportunities for professional development for self and others; steadily expand both depth and breadth of relevant technical, professional, and business domain skills; develop skills in teammates through coaching and mentoring; create publications and deliver talks relevant to job function for use by a technical and/or functional community; pursue educational and collaboration opportunities with customers and peers in the community; spearhead innovation and define best practices to deploy new technologies and applications with in-depth understanding of the subject matter.
  • Meet deadlines, balance priorities, be dependable, use time effectively, and persevere in the face of resistance and setbacks; complete diverse assignments and establish efficiencies to make them easier for others; be direct and truthful, keep confidences, admit mistakes, and act as a steadying influence in a crisis; take ownership of assignments and areas of responsibility; take the initiative to analyze and solve issues/problems; keep supervisor informed of progress and obstacles and work responsibly without supervision; adhere to university policies and guidelines and the requirements of the position of special trust.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher. Five years production software development experience. Deep knowledge of software development principles, methods and techniques. Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, and testing complex software applications and integrations. Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technologies. Ability to design systems for high availability, security, manageability, reliability. Demonstrated ability to analyze, test, document, and debug code. Demonstrated experience developing and consuming APIs. Production experience with relational databases and Unix/Linux command line utilities. High proficiency with Python and/or JavaScript. Ability to mentor team members and ensure that implemented solutions meet expected quality standards and fulfill the architectural vision. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than five years production software development experience. Proficiency in GroovyScript. Experience programming in multiple languages with multiple databases. Familiarity with higher education student information systems, especially financial aid and scholarship management systems. Production experience with AWS platform. Familiarity with agile software methodologies. Experience developing and maintaining software applications at the University of Texas at Austin.
