Financing + Payments Infrastructure for the $300B Commercial Insurance Market

JOB DESCRIPTION

Ascend, is building a financing and payments infrastructure for commercial insurance (which is not as boring as it seems). It's a $300bn market with 40% of premiums still paid via paper checks !😱 Today's solutions we're built 40 years ago for pen and paper insurance sales and as a result are under-penetraed and inefficeint. These incumbent workflows are very tedious, manual & offline for both customers & agencies. Our solution provides a turn-key (API & white-labeled) solution for MGAs, agencies, insurance platforms & carriers to offer financing and modern payment options to their customers.

Ascend has raised $5.5m in venture capital from world-class technology investors including First Round Capital, Susa Ventures, FirstMark Capital, South Park Commons, and Box Group.

We’re looking for a senior engineer to join our team and help us solve these complex technical challenges. The ideal candidate loves to learn, is highly-determined to grow with the business, and is motivated by new and unqiue problems. This person will be a key member of both our engineering and overall team so will have a large impact on the technical and cultural direction of the business.

Responsibilities will include

  • Build applications and services using Rails/Javascript.
  • Work directly with our cross-functional team & customers to define & build product.
  • Generalist - our team is small and you'll likely be involved in cross-functional things.
  • Help design & implement our technical architecture & processes

You might be a good fit if:

  • A strong desire to learn new skills and business problems
  • Experience and knowledge of the full web stack
  • Experience with relational databases
  • Experience building and scaling consumer products
  • Familiar or excited to work with Ruby on Rails and Next.js
  • Familiar building external APIs & integrations with platforms such as Salesforce.
  • Have 5+ years of writing experience writing production code

Tech Stack & Processes

  • Ruby on Rails API hosted on Heroku
  • Next.js w/Typescript hosted on Vercel
  • Tailwind CSS across all the FE
  • Postgres + Redis for Storage
  • Continuous integration & delivery

INTERVIEW PROCESS

After an initial call where you can meet the (whole) team, we can discuss what a good process looks like for you. As an example, we are looking for builders so we would like candidates to build a take home project on their own time. The take home project is very similar to something you might build day to day as an engineer at Ascend. Once completed, we'd run through the implementation together to see design & technical decisions they made. We use rails internally but you could use a web language & framework of your choice.
