Who we are:
At Eight Bit Studios, our fully remote team is made up of skilled UX Strategists, Digital Product Designers, Mobile and Web Developers, Project Managers, Account & Sales Managers and QA Analysts. We care deeply about partnering with our clients to deliver human-centered, fun, and beautiful mobile and web products that we can all take pride in. Our Technology Team is full of well-rounded, dedicated, multidisciplinary technologists who are passionate about learning. We collaborate closely with Design and UX to deliver the best digital experiences to our users and we stretch the boundaries of our capabilities to ensure our amazing team executes with the highest fidelity.
OK, so where do you fit in?
We are looking for a Ruby on Rails Developer to join our team to build out features for a web-based product with a RESTful api that serves companion mobile apps. You will work with other developers, our user experience and design teams, QA, and a project manager to deliver those features on a regular release cadence.
Please note, at this time, we are only able to consider candidates who live in the US and are available to work in central time to align with our client's calendars and our culture of team collaboration.
As a Rails Developer at Eight Bit, we would expect that you:
Know that your code needs to be understandable to the next person that reads it, so you write clean, readable, and well tested software.
Have a good grasp of the web development landscape, have worked with frameworks other than Rails and/or have dabbled in mobile development.
Feel confident working independently, but also accept feedback and naturally do your best work when you are collaborating with the team.
Have good soft skills and are able to communicate technical details in a non-technical way.
Are willing to work hard, are unafraid to make mistakes, and try to learn from those mistakes.
Here’s what else you need for the role:
Here’s why people like working at Eight Bit:
We recognize that the key to our ability to deliver on great digital products is tied to creating an inclusive environment where people can do their best work. At Eight Bit, we care a great deal about balancing our work and life, so our people-first employee package for full time employees includes competitive compensation and healthcare benefits, generous vacation time, paid holidays, an annual end of year office closure, paid parental leave, a $1000 remote work stipend, and flexible (that means parent & remote learning friendly) work schedules, along with fun company activities and a supportive work environment - even over Zoom.
We take equality seriously.
Eight Bit Studios is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and is committed to equal opportunity employment without regard to race, religion, color, gender (including gender identity, change of sex and transgender status), sexual orientation, age, disability, ancestry, national origin, military or veteran status, marital status, genetic information or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
Eight Bit Studios works to foster an inclusive workplace through transparent leadership, a values-based culture rooted in empathy, a commitment to diversity hiring, community engagement, and work/life balance & flexibility.
Eight Bit Studios benefits from strong women in key leadership positions on the executive team as well as our leadership team. As CEO, Heather Brown plays a vital role in steering the company on organizational goals, financial and staffing decisions. She is committed as a leader to building equity in pay and opportunity at Eight Bit. Our leadership team also includes three key women, Carolyn Chandler, Director of UX, Katie Kelly, Director of Technology, and Emily Gennaro, Director of Project Management.
In 2018 we formed an internal committee of mission-driven thinkers called Open8 to put more focus and action on inclusion at Eight Bit. Open8 created task forces around the following areas: accessibility, inclusive design, sharad space, education, hiring, and policies. Through these efforts, and using tools to measure inclusive language, we have adjusted our job postings, interviewing practices, and hiring processes to bring forth those candidates we might not otherwise meet. We champion women in leadership positions as well as equitable pay across the organization. We also published our own guidelines for inclusive design to make sure our commitment equity is part of the work we create.
Additionally, a large 2021/22 company initiative is individual and team mentoring at the Chicago Tech Academy. The Chicago Tech Academy is a four-year contract high school located on the Near West Side that combines real-world learning, project-based learning with a STEM curriculum.
And finally, we believe that flexibility is inclusive. Our organization has lots of hard working parents and we support flexible working hours (our employees range from 20 - 40 hour week schedules), paid parental leave, holiday office closures, and unlimited vacation time. We are also fully remote!
