The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879, is a world-renowned art museum housing one of the largest permanent collections in the United States. An encyclopedic museum, the Art Institute collects, preserves, and interprets works in every medium from all cultures and historical periods. With a collection of approximately 300,000 art works and artifacts, the museum has particularly strong holdings in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, contemporary art, early 20th century European painting and sculpture, Japanese prints, and photography. The museum’s 2009 addition, the Modern Wing, features the latest in green museum technology and 264,000 square feet dedicated to modern and contemporary art, photography, architecture and design, and new museum education facilities. In addition to displaying its permanent collection, the Art Institute mounts more than 30 special exhibitions per year and features lectures, gallery tours, and special performances on a daily basis

Position Summary

The Art Institute of Chicago is looking for an innovative and experienced Web Product Manager to join the team that manages the museum’s website. The digital team is part of the larger Experience Design department, which is responsible for ensuring continuity in the visitor experience as they move from mobile to web to gallery experiences. The Art Institute of Chicago is an encyclopedic art museum with more than 300,000 works in the collection. The Web Product Manager will play an essential and leading role in how we manage the digital product, how we communicate with collaborators, and how we strategize future states of our web presence. A successful candidate will be a forward-thinking, technically-savvy digital product manager with excellent communication chops and a proven ability to prioritize and schedule workflows with engineering, design, and content.


Web management. Supervises schedules, communication, and tickets for all functionality related to Artic.Edu, the shop, and ticketing pages.

Track ticketing. The Web Product Manager is the product owner of the website and manages all tickets in Jira, while aligning with sprints and the overall development schedule.

Web strategy. Envisions and proposes new iterations of the website, while adapting to changing trends in technology. Shares insights and web trends with the broader digital team.

Content. Works closely with the communications team to update and lay out content. Also, looks for opportunities with external partners to extend our content and drive traffic to our website.

Content Management System. Oversees the CMS (Twill) and manages training and credentials for new users.

Product analytics. Actively creates and observes dashboards and turns insights into design or engineering initiatives. Works with an interdisciplinary team to observe and respond to trends in analytics.

Communication. Manages all meetings, scheduling, and communication related to the web product. Leads web-related meetings, such as the web steering committee, content group, and technical group.

Production management for web and interactive projects. This would include managing budgets, developing and coordinating contracts, and working with outside vendors on special projects.


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, new media, digital humanities, or arts administration.
  • Minimum 3-5 years professional experience managing digital products or digital project management experience.
  • Proven ability to initiate and steer large-scale digital initiatives with a solid roadmap and budget, accounting for design and development processes, while managing stakeholder expectations.
  • Expert level experience with managing priorities for a digital platform, establishing a process for incoming requests, and an ability to clearly define product goals for the organization.
  • Mastery of resource management, both in terms of people and budgets. Experience scheduling developers, creating time estimates, and tracking concurrent projects.
  • Experience with google analytics, creating dashboards, and optimizing product design based on quantitative information.
  • Fluency in track ticketing and agile development. Direct experience with the Jira platform preferred.
