For makers, authors, chefs, musicians, athletes, and anyone else making a living by creating the culture we all love, there isn’t a better tool for reaching inboxes. ConvertKit is hiring a VP of Engineering to better execute on our engineering goals as we scale from $25M ARR to $100M ARR. You will guide our engineering team to build a great product that over 250,000 creators use to earn a living.

We are looking for someone who is fluent in all of our technologies, and able to dive in and problem solve when needed. They also need to be an excellent people manager and leader who can guide the team to ship high-quality, reliable and scalable code quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the engineering function and team of four engineering managers and 18 engineers. Establish metrics to measure the team’s effectiveness and drive improvements.

  • Work closely with the executive team to plan product strategy, create an execution plan, and bring it to life.

  • Provide insight and strategic thinking to the executive team, helping to set overall strategy and tactical plans.

  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvement in our product development velocity. Consistently evaluate and update processes and outcomes to bring the most value to our customers, creating a delightful overall customer experience

  • Lead the Engineering team to build an effortless product used by millions of creators to power the growth of their audiences and businesses.

  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, and managing members of the Engineering team.

  • Grow an Engineering team with a standard of writing high-quality code and releasing bug-free features. Maintain a strong eye for detail to ensure a high level of quality throughout the application.

  • Deeply understand our customer base to build the best tool to serve creators. Stay up to date on market trends, creator needs and product opportunities.

Requirements

The right candidate should:

  • Have a strong desire to contribute to and build on our vision to be a small and efficient team, bootstrapped, remote, and always dedicated to the creator community.

  • Be committed to building a diverse engineering team that serves as a role model for the software industry.

  • Have extensive experience shepherding an Engineering team at a growth stage product-driven SaaS company. B2C experience is a strong preference.

  • Have a strong background in developing applications using Ruby on Rails, and experience with other tools in our technology stack: React, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Cassandra.

  • Be an expert in using business and product metrics to make decisions and drive direction.

  • Have experience leading teams to quickly ship well-tested features with a consistent cadence. We use the Shape Up method for product development and we are structured with inspiration from the Spotify model.

  • Have a desire to manage a highly effective team, understanding trade-offs, strategic objectives, and how to plan hiring in alignment with long-term financial goals.

  • Have the ability to foster both high performance and a high degree of psychological safety on the team. We hope you value empathy, communication, and listening skills to understand and advocate for the needs of the team.

  • Be comfortable delivering constructive feedback to drive individual growth and fostering productive conflict to seek out the best and most diverse ideas to reach the best solutions for customers.

  • Be autonomous, self-motivated, and remote-disciplined to work effectively in a 100% remote company.

Success in This Role

Success in this role will be measured by:

  • Team happiness - We measure team happiness through our regular engagement survey (leading indicator) and unwanted turnover (lagging indicator).

  • Growth of our customer base - The engineering team is responsible for scaling our infrastructure and building product to drive total free and paying customers on our platform.

  • Driving our north star metric - We measure total engaged subscribers across our customer base and average engaged subscribers per creator to understand the value we provide to customers.

  • Customer happiness - The goal of everything we build is to make our customers happy. Engineers influence customer happiness (leading indicator) and churn (lagging indicator) by actively participating in establishing roadmaps and building high quality products that delight creators.

  • Speed - Our goal is to build the best all-in-one creator marketing platform in the world. To do this we need to constantly focus on increasing product development velocity without sacrificing quality.

  • Keeping our promises - We set SLAs that correspond to core app accessibility and functionality for our customers. We may not be an enterprise company with contracts dependent on SLAs, but we act like we are.

  • Creating a world-class culture of inclusivity and belonging - On the qualitative side, we’ll evaluate the happiness of engineers at ConvertKit, the commitment to diversity and inclusion, the psychological safety of the engineering environment, the contribution of engineers to the overall company culture, and our contribution to the wider engineering culture in the industry.

Benefits

ConvertKit has standardized salaries based on position, no matter where you live. For this role, we’re hiring for a Senior Director (level 6 - $202,500) or VP (level 7 - $221,000). Level is determined based on your relevant experience and skills as evaluated through our interview process. Other benefits include:

  • 3 weeks paid vacation, increasing to 4 weeks paid vacation after 1 year on the team

  • $1,000 yearly vacation bonus for taking 5 consecutive days of vacation

  • 2 weeks of sick leave per year, including mental health days

What is your Interview process like?

We run the hiring process for leadership roles a little differently - you'll probably meet with a few more people - but at a minimum, you can expect the following:

  • A phone screen with someone on the hiring team
  • A phone conversation with our CEO or COO
  • A technical interview to discuss your technical knowledge with our Engineering Managers
  • A cross-team conversation with other team leads
  • A culture contribution interview
