JOB DESCRIPTION

The George Mason University Department of Computer Science, within the Volgenau School of Engineering (VSE), is looking for a highly motivated, people-oriented Coordinator of Outreach and Student Career Management for the Break Through Tech (BTT) initiative. About the Position: 

The Coordinator of Outreach and Student Career Management will be a supporting member of the Department of Computer Science and the Break Through Tech initiative team. This position directs, plans, and implements the career access functions for the initiative by marketing and expanding the presence of programs with local, regional and national employers.

The position is solely funded 100% by grant funding, and therefore is a restricted position. George Mason University received a grant from Break Through Tech to propel more students who identify as women and non-binary into tech education—and ultimately tech careers—through curriculum innovation, career access, and community building. Responsibilities:

Company Outreach and Relationships 

  • Cultivate relationships with tech related employers, non-profits, and the federal government in the DC Metropolitan area to develop a diverse workforce via internship, sprinternships, networking events, and summer guilds;
  • Proactively seek new recruitment opportunities for all incoming women and under-represented groups in the Computing fields.

Student Career Readiness Programming 

  • Lead special events (seminars and networking social events) for female students related to women in technology fields by recruiting technology leaders in the workforce;
  • Lead the career preparation of current and prospective undergraduate students by utilizing best practices and developing strategies and programs in collaboration with the University Career Center and Break through Tech;
  • Lead the sprinternship program for computing students from Mason, incoming Mason students, high school students, and community college students.

Outreach and Relationship Development with Community Colleges and Local High Schools

  • Develop outreach and recruitment efforts for student involvement in local community colleges for participation in various Break Through Tech events.

Break Through Tech Assessment 

  • Evaluate the programs for career access and opportunities in terms of efficacies and demographics using surveys as developed by the Break Through Tech program and focus groups;
  • Function as an integral part of the team within the campus and national initiative, as well as in the Computing programs that are within the Volgenau School of Engineering;
  • Ensure alignment of objectives with Break Through Tech National, Mason, and all other critical stakeholders.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in a technology domain or in Higher Education, Business Administration, Consulting, Sales/Marketing, Diversity Programs, Program Management, Human Resources, Talent or Workforce Development, or Student Services with 1-2 years of relevant work experience; or Bachelor’s Degree in technology domain or in Higher Education, Business Administration, Consulting, Sales/Marketing, Diversity Programs, Program Management, Human Resources, Talent or Workforce Development, or Student Services with 3-5 years of relevant work experience; 
  • Experience leading programs in an academic and/or corporate environment that have a technology orientation and a talent development/training focus;
  • Experience working effectively with, and maintaining a positive rapport with diverse stakeholders including but not limited to students, professors, and corporate leaders.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of interdisciplinary teams; 
  • Possess proficiency in analytical writing, verbal communication, organizational and computer skills;
  • Ability to work well with students, campus partners, parents, and external relations;
  • 2 years of experience working with college students and education programs; 
  • 2 years of experience interfacing with various units, similar to those in a campus environment (e.g. scheduling office, Women in Engineering, Student Affairs, or Office of Diversity and Inclusion);
  • Strong knowledge of collaboration tools (Teams, Slack, Google) and proficiency in other communication and office software;
  • Passion for developing mission-driven strategies and commitment to gender equity;
  • Commitment to working with diverse student and community populations.
