Cortico is looking for a product designer to help us build the Local Voices Network, a platform that gathers and amplifies under-heard voices from communities across the country. The role is critically important to the success of Cortico's strategic program efforts, and is best suited for someone seeking a hybrid role that blends product design with product management. You'll be reporting to and working in close collaboration with our COO, who oversees product development and strategy. Specifically, you’ll be working on our online platform and app-assisted hardware product that supports community organizations, journalists, policymakers, and citizens in gathering people together for constructive dialogue, amplifying voices from these conversations to a wider audience, and making sense of large collections of public conversation data.
Cortico's product and engineering team is kind, collaborative, inquisitive, and inclusive. We have high standards for quality and ethics, and help each other learn in order to reach our objectives. We think technology is best built by teams with a diversity of background, thought, and experience. Every team member is a human first, and we strive to create a culture and environment that supports your career goals and respects all of the hats you wear in life, not just the ones that earn you a paycheck.
You've read about our mission and values and they strongly align with yours.
You’re passionate about the problems we're working on.
You value an iterative, evidence-based practice of user-centered design.
You’re a champion of clean, accessible and intuitive design.
You understand that communication, organization, and execution are the skills that mark an effective product person, not domain knowledge.
You’re opinionated about technology and its application in the real world.
You value accountability, equity and transparency in your work and seek to design these values into the products you build.
You’re interested in mentoring others in UI and UX design.
Portfolio reflecting 2+ years of experience creating and shipping work, with your role clearly defined in each project.
Experience collaborating with engineers and product managers, giving and accepting constructive feedback.
Fluent in visual design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, or Figma.
Strong foundation in visual design and user experience.
Deep understanding of responsive web design, web standards, and accessibility best practices.
If you are unsure if you are qualified, please consider applying anyway.
We aim to review and respond to all applicants within two weeks of submission.
We'll schedule a short phone call with the hiring manager to set expectations and make sure we're all on the same page about the role and your qualifications.
You'll be asked to do a time bound design assignment that is intended to give you a sense of the types of design problems you may encounter in the role and give us a sense of how you approach problem solving. We will not give you an assignment that is for a product or feature we are intending to build. We'll schedule a zoom meeting with the hiring team to do a portfolio and assignment review and a series of shorter meetings with members of our engineering and conversation teams.
Finally, you'll meet with our CEO and have the chance to connect with any staff member at Cortico to meet folks from other roles and get any questions answered about the inner workings of the organization.
Incorporated in 2017 by a racially inclusive team of founders, Cortico has prioritized hiring for racial and gender inclusion from the start. We prioritize amplifying under-heard voices through our programs and technology, and consider a diverse team to be essential to delivering on our mission.
Our current team is 40% POC or multiracial and we aim to maintain or increase that as we grow. We prioritize a ‘whole person’ approach to organizational culture, and do not assume that technology is value-neutral. We aim for equity outcomes in the implementation of our technology and seek team members who are interested in humane tech, bringing a social conscience and critical analysis to systems and design.
We encourage everyone on the team to bring their experiences and perspectives into play when navigating program and organizational priorities. We practice engaging differences among us as we promote others using our process and platform to do the same.
