We are looking for an established Senior Front-End Engineer to join our growing, distributed workforce. You'll work on a team of friendly engineers to create a new, innovative digital product for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It would help if you enjoyed tackling complex problems while working with other cross-disciplinary team members to deliver elegant solutions across a complete, modern technology stack. This is a Senior position, so you should be self-directed and confident in your skills.

It would help if you were an expert in React and Javascript and in crafting code that is accessible, maintainable, documented, and tested. You will help lead the team through issue resolution by evaluating trade-offs and presenting options and approaches to our partners and colleagues.
The salary for the position is $135k/yr + Full Benefits.

This is a remote position, but occasional travel may be required. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for this position.

Your responsibilities:

  • Have extensive ownership and the ability to set the vision and best practices for a new web product
  • Work with other Front End engineers to set the standard for product and code quality within the web product
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, other teams, both internal and external partners, owning a large part of the process from problem understanding to shipping the solution
  • Maintain our high engineering standards and bring consistency to the codebase
  • Ship high-quality, scalable, and robust solutions
  • Suggest and drive organization-wide initiatives
  • Solve technical problems of high scope and complexity
  • Identify areas of improvements in the code base, both specific to your group and outside your group (e.g., component library), and help contribute to making it better
  • Advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance that have a particular impact on your team
  • Exert influence on the overall vision and long-range goals of your team. This could be technical and product-focused.
  • Collaborate with back-end developers and web designers to improve the usability
  • Get feedback from, and build solutions for users and customers
  • Write functional requirement documents and guides
  • Help back-end developers with coding and troubleshooting
  • Ensure high-quality graphic standards and brand consistency
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging technologies

Your requirements: (Please don't self-disqualify if you don't meet all 😊)

  • 5+ years of hands-on, professional experience
  • Professional experience with React or another modern JavaScript web framework (Angular, Ember, etc.)
  • Experience with writing automated tests (e.g., Jest, Karma, Jasmine, Mocha, AVA, tape)
  • Experience using Git/Github in a professional/workplace environment
  • A solid understanding of core web and browser concepts (e.g., how the browser parses and constructs a web page)
  • A solid knowledge of semantic HTML, CSS, and core JavaScript concepts
  • Familiarity with content management systems (e.g., Drupal)
  • Familiarity with PHP as a nice-to-have
  • A demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and organizational problems and propose thorough, iterative solutions
  • Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems
  • A strong communicator who’s confident in their leadership skills
  • Comfortable working and leading in an agile, iterative team environment
  • An inclination towards communication, inclusion, and visibility
  • Effective communication skills: Regularly achieve consensus with peers, collaboration, and clear status updates
  • Demonstrated ability to onboard and integrate with a project long-term
  • Self-motivated, self-managing, and efficient with excellent organizational skills

  • BSc degree in Computer Science or relevant field
