JOB DESCRIPTION

Column is looking to hire a Senior Software Engineer (full-stack Public Notice Product Team) to lead high-impact technical projects, mentor junior engineers and up-level our engineering practices. They will be responsible for executing against our product roadmap, identifying & addressing large-scale architectural issues, and strengthening the quality of our engineering org as a whole. The role will report directly to Software Engineering Manager, Zoe Robert.

What You'll Do

  • First Week: You will learn about Column's mission and vision and seek to understand our existing product and the engineering team. We're a small company that's growing quickly, so interpersonal rapport is essential.
  • First Month: You will engage in conversations with leadership to identify and address large-scale architectural issues. Begin contributing positively to our company culture by fostering a low-ego attitude and socially supportive community.
  • First Six Months: Following traditional SCRUM practices, you will deliver large-scale project(s) without oversight from end to end. Serve as one of the earliest and most experienced hires on our engineering team, and help lay the foundation for building a technical team of consequence. Make recommendations for process changes and evangelize best practices and approaches, plan and implement architectural changes
  • First Year: You will effectively lead large cross-team development efforts & serve as an ideal communication partner for non-technical teams. Seek out & solve the hardest problems in multiple product areas and technical domains.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • You're looking for a remote-first role working with wildly talented people who care about their impact on local communities.
  • You have at least 4+ years of experience as a software engineer and 1+ year(s) of experience as a Senior SWE, Tech Lead, or Team Lead at a company with at least 50+ engineers.
  • You have extensive experience with Node.js and at least one modern web development framework (React, Vue, Angular, etc.)
  • You have a strong desire to exemplify our operating principles — be worthy of trust, do work that matters, never stop learning, intentionally build community, and tell a better story.
  • You are able to work during US-based Time zones at least one week per month (for on-call).
  • You are excited about working in a client-facing engineering role.
  • While not required, It would be great if you had any experience with Google Cloud Platform, Data engineering, or Data analysis.
  • You have grit and really want to work with us — if you do not resemble our ideal candidate, tell us why you'd still be a great fit for this role in an optional cover letter.

Compensation and Benefits
Column is built on the belief that important information should be accessible to the public. As such, we work hard to model this behavior for potential Columnists by including our base compensation in all job descriptions and making our full benefits accessible online.

  • For US-based candidates, we offer a base salary of $180,000, plus a meaningful equity stake and 401k plan with a 5% match
  • For candidates outside of the US, we use a market multiplier and 12-month trailing conversion rate to convert on-target earnings into local currency. We also offer a meaningful equity stake and retirement plans relevant to the country (e.g., a pension plan in UK).
  • In addition, all Columnists receive healthcare, vision, & dental coverage for them and their dependents
  • Unlimited (and encouraged) paid time off with a suggested 15-day minimum and 16-weeks paid parental leave
  • Multiple stipends for you to invest in a home office setup and pursue wellness activities that make you feel healthy and whole

    • 30 minute behavioral interview (15 min Teaching, 15 min experience questions from the full stack team)
    • 45 systems design interview
  • Third round

    • 45 hiring manager interview (technical experience, behavioral and touch on algorithms)
    • 30 CTO interview
