JOB DESCRIPTION

Linux DevOps Engineering Team (two positions available)

  • DevOps Engineer / Linux Administrator
  • Cloud DevOps Engineer / Architect

NSF's National Optical-IR Astronomy Research Laboratory

If you are looking for professional growth, are enthusiastic about science and new technologies, have a curious mind, and love to work in a supportive team, we should talk! NSF's National Optical-IR Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab; https://noirlab.edu//) is looking for two motivated Linux DevOps Engineers. Based in Tucson, AZ, (adjacent to the University of Arizona campus.)

NSF’s NOIRLab is the preeminent US national center for ground-based, nighttime optical and infrared astronomy. The mission of NOIRLab is to enable breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics by developing and operating state-of-the-art ground-based observatories and providing data products and services for a diverse and inclusive community.

The successful candidates will begin work immediately with the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC) division of NOIRLab. At CSDC, teams of scientists and engineers work together in an intellectually stimulating environment to build software systems for data-intensive astronomy. Immediate openings are available in support of the Astro Data Lab science platform (https://datalab.noao.edu//), ANTARES alert broker (https://antares.noirlab.edu//), and Astro Data Archive (https://astroarchive.noirlab.edu//) systems.

We are building a well-rounded team of systems and software engineers who are:

  • Able to build robust, automated, performant computer systems, leveraging on-premises server hardware, as well as cloud platforms
  • Self-starters and able to work collaboratively with software engineers and scientists
  • Eager to learn new technologies on the job or through company-paid training

The CSDC team needs two highly motivated individuals in complementary roles to support on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure. Candidates of all experience levels (junior, mid-level, senior) are encouraged to apply.

  • DevOps Engineer / Linux Administrator: Design, build and maintain performant Linux-based computing systems in support of 200+ node data center (relocation to Tucson, AZ required)
  • Cloud DevOps Engineer / Architect:  Plan, design and coordinate cloud migration strategies (e.g. “lift and shift”) aimed toward cost-effective improvement in performance and reliability of CSDC data-intensive software applications (remote-work OK).

Essential Functions of the team

  • Maintain high availability of compute infrastructure through implementation of fault-tolerant resources and automated trouble alert/response systems.
  • Provide first-line support to system error conditions.
  • Solutions-provider to software engineering teams to architect infrastructure needed for deployment of in-house software systems
  • Working around a data center environment: racking new servers, running cables
  • Maintain hardware systems lifecycle from deployment to phase-out
  • Participate in lab-wide IT solutions in coordination with NOIRLab ITOps
  • Occasional travel (nominally every 2 years) to a data mirror site in La Serena, Chile
  • Participate in continuing education through on-the-job training and/or formal training to stay abreast of rapidly evolving technological trends

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three+ years of Linux systems engineering/administration experience
  • Experience provisioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting bare-metal and virtual Linux servers in a TCP/IP network environment
  • Competency in at least one scripting language (e.g. Python, Shell, BASH)

Preferred Qualifications

All candidates with basic familiarity or experience in one or more of these technologies are encouraged to apply:

  • Managing Linux-based server systems at the scale of 100+ nodes
  • Configuration and optimization of network-attached storage and clustered storage technologies (e.g. IBM Spectrum Scale; NFS; GLusterFS)
  • Building and maintaining locally-attached RAID/LVM sub-systems
  • DevOps tools (e.g. Chef, Ansible, SaltStack, Puppet, cfengine) for configuration management of compute infrastructure at scale
  • Deploying Docker containers, and container orchestration with Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, or similar
  • Virtual machine technologies (e.g. KVM, QEMU, libvirt, Xen, VMWare)
  • Open-source database administration  (e.g. Postgres, MySQL, Cassandra)
  • Commercial cloud platforms (e.g. Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services)
  • Lift-and-shift cloud-migration
  • High Performance Computing (HPC) design and operation

Candidates from all industries and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The level of the position hired will depend on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.  For full consideration, please submit your completed application by May 3, 2021.
