Backrs is a digital platform that helps young people build and engage with a team of supporters who are there for them financially, emotionally, and personally on their life’s everyday journey. Young people get a team of adults who are interested in them – their day, their dreams, their obstacles, and their accomplishments.
Adult backrs get a powerful and rewarding new way to engage with youth and provide extra support, and they get to do it as part of a small team of similarly inspired people.


Position Overview

We are seeking individuals excited to use their engineering skills to have an impact on the lives of young people across the United States. We are looking for experienced full stack developers to join our development team. A significant portion of this role will be hands-on with the code, but will also involve leadership and a touch of mentorship as we refine and grow our tech team culture.  Be ready to jump into a rapidly growing and evolving code base where you can leave your mark and guide the future of our platform, alongside a group of diverse and fun colleagues.

What if each and every kid had their own team of supporters?  Bumps would be less bumpy. And aspirations might be a little more in reach. So Backrs is making it happen!  We create networked communities of supporters around individual young people – communities that affirm youth and give caring adults a rewarding new way to connect and share.


We are looking for experienced full stack developers to join our development team.  The developer should be able to independently own development tasks and provide coaching to junior developers. Our cloud based (AWS) platform includes backend functionality (Node.js) communicating with a Hybrid App (React + Ionic) deployed on iOS and Android. Below are examples of front end, back end, and general skills we’re seeking.

Front End Skills

  • Implementing UI’s from provided wireframes
  • Understanding of common front end technologies with an emphasis on React / Material UI
  • Experience interfacing with RESTful API endpoints
  • Experience with responsive interfaces, ideally hybrid mobile development (iOS / Android) via Ionic or similar frameworks

Back End Skills

  • Implementation of DB / APIs / other back end modules from provided design documentation in Node js (or similar)
  • Data structure design and implementation using common DB technologies (SQL, etc) with the drive to learn more as needed
  • Back end API development experience
  • Includes applying common security methodologies
  • Includes creating documentation
  • Bonus: Ability to lead / support DevOps including
  • Configuration of cloud based infrastructure (AWS)
  • Continuous integration / automated deployment (Serverless, CICD, etc)
  • Deployment of hybrid apps via iOS and Android app stores

General Skills

  • 5+ years of development experience
  • Includes experience participating in software design, algorithm design, and the creative direction of a product(s)
  • 5+ years holding a senior role on development teams
  • Experience and interest in mentoring junior developers
  • Strong understanding of Agile development methodologies
  • Strong understanding of cloud based systems (AWS, etc) as an underlying architecture for a web and mobile based platform
  • Extensive experience building API driven systems (front or back end)
  • Experience with B2C, social, or community platforms
  • Bonus: experience with platforms that work with HS / early college aged users
  • Experience with common payment systems (Stripe, etc)
  • Experience with common authentication and security tools (Auth0, etc)
  • Experience with data security concepts as it relates to protected information of users
  • Understanding of test automation / TDD
  • Understanding of DevOps / Continuous Integration / Automated build and deployment
  • Willingness to learn and apply the “right tool for the job” as it pertains to programming languages

General Expectations

  • Work directly with the engineering and company leadership team to help design and build an innovative, cloud based platform focused on helping young adults achieve success
  • Be hands on with code; own complex development challenges end to end; collaborate to come up with innovative solutions
  • Quick to output and has a bias for action mentality to development work - looks to use existing open source code or off the shelf tech where available, raises their hand to ask for thought partnership where stuck, knows when something is good enough to deliver and is willing to take on some tech debt as currency of being a start up   
  • Contributes not just to their own work but to making the team and company better - Help to delegate development tasks, Help refine and expand the development process for the company, Coach and mentor junior team members 

Location: Remote 

Salary Range: 130k - 170k / yr

Employment type: 6 - 12 month initial contract, opportunity to move to full-time following initial contract period

Candidates will be screened by our Engineering Leader and invited for an initial technical interview.  This interview will test their knowledge of React and database concepts.  We will also ask candidates to share examples of their prior work and code through Github for review.

Candidates that pass the initial technical interview and code review will meet together with the CEO and Community Leader to learn more about the vision for the company and they will conduct a behavioral interview together including DEI questions.

Young people in the Backrs Community are aged 15 - 24 and attend or graduated from Title 1 schools.  Currently, 95% of proteges are Black and 5% are Latinx.
