Sym helps engineers create the perfect security and privacy workflows for their teams. We provide the building blocks to roll out controls that match your team’s tools and processes, while ensuring you meet your compliance requirements. We ship a Terraform provider and Python framework that lets infrastructure teams roll out templated, compliance-friendly security & privacy workflows to their organizations. This can help our customers achieve compliance with standards such as HIPAA and SOC 2. We’re a venture-backed company with HQs in Boston and San Francisco. Our mission is to empower teams to build the best products in any compliance environment.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Sym is seeking a backend engineer to join our fully-distributed team! Our customers use Sym’s intelligent approvals-as-code platform to facilitate and automate access to sensitive infrastructure, tools, and data without compromising on speed or security. We’re building a powerful tool for developers, and we need your help to put even more power in their hands!

Some things about you that might make Sym a great fit:

  • You’re excited to be part of a fast-moving startup – eager to jump in, figure things out, and learn everything you can.
  • You’re product-minded. You like having input into what you’re building, and you’re happiest when you’re shipping things that solve meaningful problems for users.
  • You’re a fan of the DevOps movement. You want to be on a team that follows DevOps practices, and building a platform to help teams express more than just their infrastructure as code sounds exciting.
  • You’ve got some experience building things in a dynamically-typed language like Python, Ruby, or JavaScript. Even better if you’ve got some experience with an IaC tool like Terraform as well. (We use Python and Terraform to build Sym, but we can help you get up to speed.)
  • You’ve worked as a software engineer for at least a couple of years and are comfortable working independently. We spend a lot of time collaborating and pairing, but we’re a fully distributed team so there will be times when you’re working on your own.

Things you might work on in your first six months:

  • Iterate on our Platform, SDK and Terraform provider to build new features and integrations and write the documentation that goes with them to help our customers get the most out of the Sym platform.
  • Spend time alongside our CEO and our Head of Product speaking with customers and prospects to understand their needs and help support them when they run into problems.
  • Propose a new feature or internal tool, work with the team to dial in the scope and requirements, and maybe even lead the project yourself!

About the team:

We're a diverse and geographically distributed team that loves working directly with our customers, collaborating with each other on tough technical problems, and posting pictures of our pets, kids, and fresh haircuts in Slack. We’re committed to balance and learning in our work, because we believe that working reasonable hours and learning from both wins and failures sets us up for long-term success together. We care deeply about building a workforce and culture that looks like the world around us, inclusive and equitable for people of all backgrounds and experiences. Because of this, we particularly encourage people from communities that tend to be underrepresented to apply, including women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. We want you to know that you can be a great candidate even if you don't perfectly fit the mold we describe above! If that's you, please don't hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

Benefits:

Sym is committed to providing an exceptional remote first work environment to support our team members. In addition to competitive salary and equity, we provide:

  • Company sponsored health insurance plans (Health, Dental & Vision Plans)
  • Pre-tax incentives: HSA, FSA, 401K, plus a Commuter Benefit if you’d prefer to work from our Boston office
  • Workspace stipend for WFH set-up
  • Unlimited PTO/Sick Days (with strongly encouraged vacation)
  • Twice-a-year company offsites to hang out with everyone in person (and do a little work together too)
  • Regular company-wide remote social activities: interactive games, meditations, lunch & learns, book clubs, etc.
  • Monthly health & wellness stipends and healthy snack boxes
  • Learning stipends for professional development

INTERVIEW PROCESS

Preliminary screening (career alignment), technical screening (pairing session), virtual onsite (debugging and values and alignment). If it's a perfect match, we'll talk offer details!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

We care deeply about building a workforce and culture that is inclusive and equitable for people of all backgrounds and experiences. Because of this, we particularly encourage people from communities that tend to be underrepresented to apply, including women, people of color, and LGBTQ people.
