NCFL works to eradicate poverty through education solutions for families.


The Director of Web Development works collaboratively with an energetic team to maintain and contribute to NCFL’s digital properties, including Wonderopolis, the National Literacy Directory, FACE website, NCFL website, Say & Play With Words, Statewide Family Engagement Centers Network website, and others. This position works under supervision of the Vice President, Finance & CFO, to develop, maintain, and monitor websites that align with NCFL strategies and mission and to continue the high standards set forth for our award-winning websites for children and families. The Director of Web Development will work in a cross-division atmosphere, collaborating with internal NCFL staff. This is a fully remote position.


Essential functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage both the Front End and Back End of NCFL’s various digital properties and work closely with a cross-departmental team to maintain the sites, resolve issues, create updates, etc.
  • Ensure all site security requirements and protocols are maintained and monitored.
  • Maintain relationships with relevant vendors and staff, including timely and regular communication regarding issue resolution, feature builds, etc.
  • Understand the purpose, audience, and content strategy of NCFL’s various digital properties to best meet the needs of each.
  • Deploy additions and changes to sites and resolve immediate issues during off-peak hours as required.
  • Create and maintain a cohesive technical approach across NCFL’s digital properties.
  • Implement consistent approach and procedures across properties and consistently document work.
  • Develop and train staff on new features for digital properties as needed.
  • Uphold brand standards.
  • Engage in workflow management system to effectively collaborate with relevant NCFL staff and website teams.
  • Demonstrate interest in and enthusiasm for how NCFL’s work intersects with technology.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in web development or similar field.
  • At least five years of experience with PHP, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and database development.
  • Proficient in MySQL, Apache, and Nginx.
  • Experience with Content Management Systems, ElasticSearch, and Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience troubleshooting in multiple platforms and tiered environments.
  • Experience managing a project, including timelines, milestones, and expectations.
  • Understanding of interaction design, UX/UI of different sites.
  • Understanding of relational databases and queries.
  • Understanding of browser rendering behavior and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Understanding of code versioning tools (such as Git) and tracking tools (such as Jira).
  • Implementation and use of code quality standards with tools like PMD, FindBugs, Checkstyle, etc.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both internal staff and external contacts.


  • Prolonged period of sitting at a desk and working at a computer.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • The ability to use hands and fingers to manipulate keyboard including some reaching requiring consistent use of hands and arms.

Salary range: $80-90K

First there would be a phone screen with Manager, Human Resources. Then two rounds of zoom interviews with the hiring committee which is made up of 5-6 internal staff members.
