Role Description

Matterworks is seeking a software engineer to join our growing team. As a pioneering member of the software engineering team, you will be integral to how we mature our tooling and engineering processes, as well as the team itself, to support the advancement and adoption of our technology. You will play a critical role in developing our microservices-based cloud platform, which will provide real-time insights and powerful analytics tools for the discovery, development, and manufacturing of biological therapies. Collaborating with our multidisciplinary product development team, you will develop customer-facing apps and services that meet defined technical and user-experience requirements. This is a unique opportunity to help build a first-of-its-kind digital platform from the ground up. Working closely with our chemistry, ML/AI, and marketing teams, you will grow your technical expertise and leadership, and play a key role in delivering an innovative platform that will advance scientific research and discovery.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop product and platform services hosted on AWS
• Create applications that seamlessly integrate with customer workflows and provide intuitive visualization of data for end-users
• Architect a highly scalable and performant distributed system that executes complex data processing, including ML models
• Integrate enterprise services, including identity, security, and ecommerce
• Participate in the full software development lifecycle: defining, planning, implementing, and testing features and stories
• Collaborate with our DevOps engineers to define and support CI/CD processes

About You

• 2-8 years of professional experience building commercial cloud applications and services
• Completion of at least one full product development lifecycle, including deployment, support, and maintenance
• Proficiency in cloud computing (preferably AWS), virtualization, and microservices architectures

• Demonstrated understanding of at least one modern web development stack:

  • backend: Python, Ruby, Java, Go
  • frontend: Typescript, React, Vue.js, GraphQL
  • fullstack: Django, node.JS
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to incorporate feedback into iterative work
• Familiarity designing and publishing service APIs for internal and external integration
• Deep sense of independence and ownership
• Practical knowledge of agile testing methodologies, such as FDD, TDD, and/or BDD
• Exposure to software engineering methodologies and best practices
• Experience contributing to the architecture and design of both new and existing systems

Nice to Have

• Advanced skills in Python, Typescript, and/or Javascript
• Exposure to unit and integration testing frameworks (Pytest, Pyunit, Behave, Selenium)
• Expertise with the design, maintenance, and scaling of relational databases
• Experience collaborating cross-functionally with scientists, AI/ML experts, and marketing teams
