Gray Bike ( is a small digital product studio. We provide end-to-end product design and development services for a variety of clients. Our clients span across several industries: tech, e-commerce, home goods, apparel, educational non-profits, healthcare, manufacturing, cycling, and more.

Our team is distributed across the US & South America. We primarily work with freelancers, with a handful of full time staff.

The Role

We are hiring a part-time front end developer for a few ongoing Gatsby projects that we need some extra help with. Some of them are internal, and some are for our clients. To start, we may need approximately 10 - 20 hours of work a week, but if things go well this could increase.

You will receive designs and implementation specs and will build Gatsby Pages and React components across projects.

Mid-level experience and above preferred.

Required Skills:

  • HTML

  • Excellent CSS Skills

  • React

  • Gatsby

  • Ability to be self driven, but knowing when to stop and ask for help.

Being strong in CSS will be crucial to the success of these projects, since we can’t always leverage existing components.

Bonus Skills:

  • React Native

  • Styled Components

  • Tachyons

  • Netlify or Heroku experience

  • Freelance experience: delivered projects, managed budget/estimate, worked with non-technical clients (most important)

  • Ability to build components from rough specs or wireframes based on a style guide

  • Experience working with large, existing codebases

You’ll report directly to our founder, Pavan Trikutam, and will work alongside a few of our senior developers already working on the project. We’d prefer folks who have had a few professional projects under their belt, but if you’re not sure if you have enough experience -- please apply anyway!

How we work

Our projects are all led by our founder, Pavan Trikutam. He’s a developer as well, so he works extra hard to try and make sure tasks and projects are very clearly defined by the time they get to you. If there’s ambiguity, we will always clarify directly with the end client before passing the work along to you.

We only take on projects with a reasonable timeline, and we strongly discourage our collaborators from working nights or weekends (unless that’s when they prefer to work).

We work remotely and asynchronously. Excellent communication is key to making this arrangement work. We review each other’s code via pull requests, discuss tasks on Asana and Github Issues, and communicate via Slack and email. Here are our tips for remote / asynchronous communication:

We value good design, quality code, and pragmatic decision making when it comes to delivering software. We are always trying to learn from each other. Constructive and collaborative feedback is always welcome.

What is your Interview process like?

We don’t do white boarding exercises. We’d rather meet you, understand your experience and knowledge, and try out a small project to see if it’s a good fit.

  • Portfolio review. Send us your portfolio and/or samples of your work on Github.
  • 60 minute video call to get to know each other. This won’t be a technical white boarding interview, but we will want to discuss your experience and cover technical topics.
  • 60 minute code sample review. After the initial screen, we’ll want to schedule some time for you to prepare a piece of code you’re proud of, and walk us through the details of the implementation.
  • Reference Checks
  • Paid Trial Project (5 - 10 hours)
