Assemble is a stealth-mode enterprise SaaS startup that is currently pre-launch. We are looking for a Founding Engineer to help us build our initial platform. We are currently a small team, so you’ll have a lot of direct ownership on the product, our APIs, platform design, and engineering processes.   • Design, build, and maintain the core product from the ground up alongside a small but seasoned engineering team.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teammates to understand customer requirements, come up with solutions, and ship iterations on a daily basis.

  • Tackle a wide variety of technical problems throughout the stack and contribute to all parts of our product code base.

  • Shape and improve engineering culture, standards, tooling, and processes.

  • Help build a successful business that does well by doing good.


  • A full stack generalist with 3+ years of professional software development experience.

  • Broadly knowledgeable about end-to-end web development and deeply knowledgeable in either frontend, backend, or DevOps/infrastructure.

  • An excellent communicator with both words and code. You understand the importance of written and verbal communication skills for high-performing technical teams.

  • Capable of seeing the “big picture” in ambiguous problems, driving elegant solutions, and having sharp attention to detail.

  • Excited about building an engineering culture that’s collaborative, high-velocity, intentional, and customer-focused.


  • You are familiar with React.js, Node.js, Postgres/SQL, and Google Cloud Platform/AWS.

  • You have experience working at a startup, growing an engineering team, or building a new product.

Assemble is working to accelerate the world's transition to a future that is fair, equitable, consistent, competitive, and explainable. Founded in summer 2020 by early-stage operators, Assemble is (loosely) based in San Francisco, CA and open to remote employees.

What is your Interview process like?

We begin with a phone screen with our two cofounders (either separately or together). Then, we follow with a technical screen and technical onsite.

The technical screen consists of working through a coding problem as a paired exercise with one of our current engineers. We can do this exercise in Go, Ruby, or Java depending on what you're most comfortable with. The paired problem itself takes about 30mins of a 50min screen, the other 20 mins is a general AMA with the engineer to hear more about Assemble and determine a mutual fit.

The final technical onsite is about two hours of technical work, in addition to a final conversation with the cofounders. The technical portion is a paired exercise with one or two of our engineers. During the two hours, we have our candidates and engineers work through the system design of a problem of their choice related to building Assemble (we have a default prompt but allow for many subjects depending on candidate interest). The point of this exercise is to understand how we would work together as well as how the candidate reasons through system design questions. Previous candidates have adopted different approaches depending on what is familiar to them: one had a Postgres database ready to use, and used it; another wrote a CLI; another wrote a React component; another wrote a Python script that processed YAML files.

What efforts are you making in terms of increasing diversity & inclusion within your company?

Yes. Both of our cofounders are underrepresented groups in tech (one is female and one is Latino). Hiring underrepresented groups is a core objective of our recruiting process. Additionally, our product and mission as a company, while pre-launch, focuses on diversity and inclusion.
