A more inclusive web is possible. Assistiv Labs builds tools that help people make the web better. We exist to help web developers, quality assurance engineers, designers, and accessibility specialists identify barriers for people using assistive technologies within their products.
Assistiv Labs seeks a versatile, motivated software engineer to join our growing team building tools to help developers make their work more accessible to people using assistive technologies. You’ll have had to ramp up on multiple new technologies across the stack quickly. You are an effective programmer who keeps the product’s goals in mind to manage scope while providing the best end-user experience possible.
You will work closely with the founders to scale and support our platform that allows people to access assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers) in the cloud. As such, you’ll gain experience in the following:
Seriously, you don’t need to already have experience with most of the tech in that list. What we do require you to have is curiosity and a willingness to dive in and learn new technologies, languages, and frameworks, probably on a daily basis.
Our ideal candidate has the flexibility to jump in and learn whatever languages and frameworks are necessary to build what needs to be built. You might be scripting Windows PowerShell or Python one day, inspecting TCP packets the next, and finish the week with web audio APIs.
You may also contribute to answering customer questions in our support queue and possibly attend customer-facing sales calls and demos.
We highly value teamwork and collaboration, so excellent, English-language communication skills are essential for this and all roles at Assistiv Labs. Prior experience with digital accessibility is not required for this role, but is helpful. More important is that you want to help make the web more inclusive and are eager to learn more about accessibility in order to do that.
Assistiv Labs makes the web better by building tools to enable developers, quality assurance engineers, designers, and accessibility specialists to validate their work on assistive technologies across operating systems. Our customers include Slack, GOV.UK, Knowbility, EAB, and more.
We’re an early-stage startup (both founders are located in/near Portland, OR), so you will heavily influence both our technical and product direction. We’re building tools to make the web more inclusive and this is just the beginning. Join us!
You’ll join a small team that’s hyper-focused on building tools to help companies make their products more accessible. We are driven by a shared commitment to building a more inclusive web.
We are early-stage, so we don’t (yet) offer all of the benefits of bigger companies, but we wholly believe you will grow in your career by working on solving hard problems alongside our team. And, we promise to have fun along the way!
For the record, we do offer equity in the form of stock options and health insurance reimbursement (ICHRA). 🙂
We firmly believe that balance and rest are essential to productive, sustainable work. To that end, we want everyone at Assistiv Labs to take the time away from work they need. The founders will not be texting you after hours! We’ll be spending time disconnected from work, just as we expect you to do.
Assistiv Labs is an inclusive workplace. If you are facing any accessibility requirements or concerns around the hiring process or employment with us, please email us at email@example.com.
We’re an early-stage startup, so the interview will consist of talking with the founders, Weston and Andrew, and deciding together whether you’re the person we should add to our small team to help us go further faster.
See the job description for the kinds of skills we’re looking for, but know that the most important thing to us is that you are smart, curious, hard working, and committed to making the web more inclusive for people with disabilities.
Our company’s mission is to make the web more inclusive for people using assistive technologies (i.e. people with disabilities). To that end, we strive to create a workplace where anyone can thrive regardless of ability.
Send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know what’s exciting to you about the role and why you’re a good fit.
People from underrepresented groups, especially those with connections to the accessibility & disability communities, are strongly encouraged to apply.
