One Design Company is an experienced and passionate group of designers, developers, project managers, writers and artists. Every client we work with becomes a part of the team. Together we face the challenges and celebrate the victories.

We’re adding a Developer to our team

We are excited to be growing our team of experienced Developers to help us keep up with the development, strategy and design challenges of our clients around the globe.

Why you want to sit with us in the cafeteria

With a culture of collaboration, a talented roster, and several office pups, the One Design Company team is active in the creative community, endlessly interested in what’s next and generally pleasant to be around. Admittedly, with the pandemic we’re not in the office, but will be in the future. We’ve asked our team to stay safe and work remotely until we can return to the office.

We’ve called Chicago our home for over a decade, nurturing strong roots in the local art, design and development communities. We work on all sorts of projects for organizations and businesses from the small, local, and boutique to some of the largest companies and brands in the world.

We strive to achieve a representative, equitable, and inclusive workplace. We believe that the best work is the result of a team with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We encourage all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical ability, religion, etc. to apply. We celebrate individuals with a multidisciplinary approach and a deep passion for their work.

Requirements

Here’s who we are looking for:

You think strategically when solving technical issues and understand the importance of asking “why” in order to make informed decisions. You produce resilient, well-structured code that adheres to industry-wide best practices. Careful attention to design, accessibility, and quality execution of code are all of the utmost importance to you. You make decisions to uphold the integrity of design throughout the development process. You value learning as a lifelong practice and desire to continually evolve and grow your skill set. You are self-motivated, proactive, and responsive and most importantly excited to learn our studio process through exposure to many different client projects.

If you were working for us, here are some of the things you would have done last week:

  • Continued build out of front-end templates for Craft, creating a system of discrete, reusable components

  • Wrote a custom PHP module and accompanying documentation to extend the default behavior of Craft

  • Submitted a Pull Request to fix a bug and further enhance ODC’s custom build tools

  • Collaborated with a designer to refine the animation on an interactive component

  • Collaborated with the larger project team to define and estimate development tasks for a given feature

  • Led a client-facing development demo that showcased development work completed in the last sprint. Answered questions while conveying technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Provided code reviews for peers, offering non-dogmatic feedback in an effort to produce resilient, well-structured, and maintainable code

Here are some other things we are looking for:

  • 1-3 years of development experience

  • Knowledge of Javascript, CSS (and preprocessors like SASS/SCSS), and HTML

  • Familiarity with modern build systems (gulp, webpack)

  • Familiarity with modern libraries and frameworks (think React JS or Tailwind CSS), and an understanding of their benefits and limitations when it comes to producing efficient, maintainable code

  • Familiarity with front-end performance and creating sites that make efficient use of resources

  • Experience building accessible, inclusive web applications that work across browsers/devices for a variety of user needs

  • Experience using Git and Git Workflows

  • Experience working with a CMS, preferably Craft CMS, or similar PHP-based platforms

  • Experience with or interest in learning best practices around website deployment and server setup (DevOps and CI/DI workflows)

Bonus points if you:

  • Have experience with PHP or other back-end languages

  • Have previous agency or consulting experience

  • Have UX and/or design experience

Benefits

We ask a lot of our people. But we give a lot, too. We're prepared to offer a competitive salary with full health benefits, unlimited time off and other paid leaves, flexibility in work schedule and location, and an inclusive and inspiring work environment.

Expectations

This application will be open for about 4 weeks for folks to apply and for us to review applications. You can expect a response the week of November 16th with regards to a first round interview. All interviews will be remote, via video chat, and with the Assistant Director of Technology and the Managing Director, People & Culture. We generally do 3 rounds of interviews: screening, skills based, and a final decision making round, but we’ll let you know what to expect along the way. Our goal is to make an offer by December 20th with a start date in early January.

Ideally you live in the Chicago area or are open to relocating. Our team today is working remotely and for the near term, but expect to be back in office again in the future. Despite the preference for a local candidate, we welcome and encourage applicants outside of Chicago to apply. We also ask that only applicants located in and legally able to work in the United States apply.

What is your Interview process like?

All interviews will be remote, via video chat, and with the Assistant Director of Technology. We generally do 3 rounds of interviews: screening, skills based, and a final decision making round, but we’ll let you know what to expect along the way. We like to see code examples, especially for the skills based round. We don't quiz or test candidates.

What efforts are you making in terms of increasing diversity & inclusion within your company?

Our workplace is inclusive in a number of different ways, but primarily in that we hire people who value diversity, multiculturalism, and the dialogue required to know our team, our clients and our community better. It starts in hiring by involving all levels of the ODC team in the interview process. We encourage team connections during onboarding through 1:1 welcome lunches (now virtual), and we celebrate our differences through lunch and learns, soup club, art club, and a number of other affinity groups. These are just to name a few.

We believe that the best work is the result of a team with diverse backgrounds and experiences and that building a representative team is a lifelong practice and not a one time goal. We also recognize that our team today is not representative of the design, development, and writing communities that we participate in, but our efforts have been and continue to be in engaging our audiences through more meaningful connections, our shared values, and reducing barriers in our process and practices for prospective team members.
