Clever unlocks a wealth of digital learning, so teachers can meet each student where they are. School can be engaging, personalized and fun for everyone. When every student gets a high quality education, every student gets a lifetime of opportunity.

Founded by educators and technologists passionate about improving education, Clever is on a mission to unlock new ways to learn for all students. Already used by more than 65% of U.S. K-12 schools, Clever brings all applications into one secure portal and provides single sign-on for everyone. With the leading network of digital learning providers, Clever makes school more engaging, personalized, and fun.

We’re looking for talented engineers who want to help build Clever into something every household, school, student, and teacher relies on.

As a software engineer on the Messaging team at Clever, you’ll work on Clever’s new real-time messaging product, designed to facilitate communication across teachers, students, and Clever’s newest user type: guardians. You’ll encounter a number of interesting product and technical problems as we scale from a minimally viable feature to a central part of the Clever ecosystem and the go-to messaging platform for K-12 education.

By joining the Messaging team, some projects you'll be working on are:

  • Teacher announcements to groups of students and guardians
  • Attachments
  • Automatic translation of messages to other languages
  • Emoji reactions
  • Load testing of our messaging infrastructure

More generally, you’ll:

  • Collaborate with other engineers as we collectively answer foundational technical questions and architect for the future of Messaging
  • Collaborate with our product manager and designer as we iterate on new features
  • Build high-quality, delightful user experiences, with an attention to detail and empathy for students, teachers, and guardians
  • Provide mentorship to other engineers

Currently, we write frontend code in TypeScript, Node.js, and React with Redux or GraphQL and backend code in Go. We also use DynamoDB, MongoDB, SQL, Docker, and many AWS services.

  • 3+ years of experience as a software engineer
  • Strong fundamentals in computer science and software engineering
  • The drive to learn and teach through collaboration and code reviews
  • Experience building scalable, mobile-responsive frontends
  • Experience building scalable backends
  • Experience with TypeScript, Node.js, React, Go, and AWS (not required)
  • Experience leading projects with other engineers
  • Commitment to equity and belonging. At Clever, we believe the classrooms we serve and our company’s halls should be spaces that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive. That is why we are committed to building diverse teams, inviting every voice, and creating a safe space for everyone to be their authentic self. By fostering equity and belonging within our circles of influence, we unlock learning for ALL students.

  • A competitive salary and equity package in a well-funded, high-growth company
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off and Paid Parental Leave
  • Top-notch healthcare, vision, and dental coverage for you and your family
  • Best-in-class mental healthcare service that supports employees' mental and emotional wellness
  • Unlimited book learning credits to and small, local bookstores
  • Professional development budget and LinkedIn Learning subscription with unlimited access to thousands of expert-led online courses
  • Annual company retreat and quarterly team events to connect with fun, bright coworkers

At Clever, we value a holistic hiring process and want to get to know the candidate both technically and non-technically. We believe interviewing is not only a time for the team to interview the candidate, but the candidate is also interviewing us! Our interview process is follows:

a 30 minute phone call with your recruiter, a 30 minute 1:1 conversation with the hiring manager via Zoom, a technical architecture assessment with 2 of our team members and lastly the virtual onsite interview. Throughout each session, and with each individual the candidate meets, the candidate is given time to ask the interview questions as well.

In the final round, you have a chance to meet a cross-functional product team member, spend more time with your future manager and complete two more technical assessments: a coding session and a networking interview. All of our technical assessments are extremely collaborative as it is a chance for the interviewers and the candidates to see what it would be like to truly work together! The candidate is also not tested on a specific language or framework and is given the opportunity to work in the language they feel most comfortable in. Prior to the virtual onsite, the recruiter will hold a 30 minute prep call with the candidate to walk through their schedule, who they will be meeting and what will be covered in each session.

At Clever, we believe the classrooms we serve and our company’s halls should be spaces that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive. That is why we are committed to building diverse teams, inviting every voice, and creating a safe space for all people within Clever. That includes constantly looking inward as a company and as individuals to examine and combat the ways we perpetuate inequitable behaviors, practices and systems. Outside of our workplace, we foster equity and belonging within our circles of influence in order to unlock learning for ALL students.
