JOB DESCRIPTION

The College Board, the national educational organization, is conducting a search for a Creative Director – Product Design System to support our Design team and lead the development of our design system. This position is based in our New York City headquarters.

About the role

In this role, you will lead our User Interface designers in work across a variety of digital products to form a compelling visual system and contribute to the development of user-friendly designs and interfaces for our audiences, students, and education professionals.

As Creative Director, you bring to our team your demonstrated ability to develop a compelling, world-class, and product-focused visual system. You will play a crucial role in setting the direction for and building out our design systems. We are looking for a creative problem solver who can think strategically but also loves getting into the details that take the design from good to great. You are able to react effectively to stakeholder feedback and findings from research in order to enhance the efficacy of your design approach. At the same time, you are able to persuade stakeholders to act in favor of on-brand, user-centric design decisions, and can demonstrate the impact of these decisions through thoughtful and compelling presentations and dialogue. While we work in a highly collaborative environment, we’re looking for someone who can also work independently, self-manage, and find ways and means to support our goals. Responsibilities of the role

  • Lead the ideation, art direction, and design of our core design standards, systems, and global UI elements.
  • Create the overall visual and UI strategy for product design in collaboration with the rest of the design leadership team.
  • Work with Directors in UX, Content Engineering, and Strategy to help create visual direction through digital experiences.
  • Develop strong stories to present and communicate design strategy to stakeholders, and team members.
  • Support research and audience validation efforts, to determine the success of your design approaches.
  • Work with other directors and designers to ensure brand alignment across teams.
  • Mentor and guide designers on day-to-day projects, as well as career paths and goals.
  • Help foster an environment for collaboration by partnering with business and other creative units to align visual design approach with project goals, and the College Board brand.

Qualifications needed for the role

  • A portfolio of your work included in your application.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in design, interaction design, or art direction for agencies.
  • Advanced understanding of visual design systems, hierarchy, typography, aesthetics, illustration, and motion design.
  • Understanding of user experience fundamentals, and their impact on UI and interaction design.
  • Understanding of the physical, cognitive, cultural, and social factors that impact design decisions.
  • Experience working within a distributed design team -collaborating with designers on different product teams to create a cohesive system that all can contribute to and pull from
  • Sharp design sensibilities, critical thinking, and an eye for details.
  • Demonstrable experience designing for large-scale, omnichannel applications.
  • Experience crafting design specifications and leveraging presentation and specification tools like Zeplin.
  • Fluency in creating visual content for mobile, responsive design.
  • Experience designing CMS driven websites, leveraging a design system
  • Mastery of industry-standard design tools, e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, et al.
  • Experience in high-fidelity prototyping using tools like Principle, Invision, Figma, After Effects, or others.
  • Appetite for problem-solving and love for fast-paced, agile, iterative design environments.
  • Experience with, and interest in, mentoring, and overseeing the work of other designers.
  • Demonstrable experience working with video and motion graphics is a big plus.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

First, there is a phone screen. Next, there is either a 30 minute one-on-one interview with the hiring manager or 1 hour technical interview. Then, there is a panel interview with team members or other stakeholders. Lastly, the final interview is with the VP of the department.
