JOB DESCRIPTION

BiasSync is a mission-driven startup working to help companies and employees understand, manage, and mitigate unconscious bias's impact in the workplace.   We are changing workplaces through Netflix-level video content that’s unlike any corporate training, video game-like activities that let people measure their own levels of bias, micro-learnings that teach key skills and other sections of our platform. While we are a new company, we already have high-profile clients like Ikea, Pepsico, and even the White House. We are a small, inclusive team who cares about team culture.

Our initial work focuses on race and gender, but we are building out modules on other biases.

We are looking for a backend engineer to help us continue scaling BiasSync. You’re a skilled, passionate software engineer who likes building and shipping. Because we’re a lean team, we prefer generalists who like touching all parts of the system and enjoy learning about new tools and technologies.  We try to build things incrementally and ship practical solutions in reasonable timeframes. We are open to engineers with slightly different levels of experience and non-traditional backgrounds.

Core backend tools we use:

  • Python
  • Flask
  • PostgreSQL (with SQLAlchemy)
  • Lambda
  • Terraform
  • AWS

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A passion for issues around diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Passionate about company culture and working as part of a small team that cares about learning and improving
  • Significant experience doing backend web engineering, particularly in Python environments and/or with PostgreSQL or other SQL databases
  • Likes working with the frontend engineers and product managers to agree on system requirements, API contracts, and the like
  • A passion for building clear, clean, well-tested software
  • Skills for building enterprise software (solving client problems, documentation, security, version management, etc)

And it would be nice if they had:

  • Excited about changing companies and their cultures
  • Interested in social psychology, psychometric measurement, and/or statistics
  • Used to devops setup and configuration tools (Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, AWS Lambda, etc)
  • Strong infosec/secure development skills

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

BiasSync's works on diversity and inclusion.  We are building tools to help large companies, governments, educational institutions, and others measure and manage unconscious bias in their workplaces.  We are also starting to work on other aspects of diversity & inclusion.  At BiasSync, we get to work with senior executives and D&I leaders at many top companies to help change their workplaces and cultures.  We also work with top academic researchers studying areas like bias and inclusive leadership.

Beyond our external mission, our company tries to walk the walk.  A lot of our focus internally is on learning and improving one's skills.  Our CEO is a Hispanic woman and we have a diverse investor base.  Still, even our company in the D&I space isn't yet as diverse as we hope, so we're trying to reach out to more folks!
